Balcony breakfast in Santorini.
This post is all about small things that I found super yum in Santorini, in particular the famous Pinterest – like balcony breakfast. Don’t worry I took the photos fast and then enjoyed eating. As this is Greece then obviously everything here is delicious (if you are into Greek cuisine that is, but so far I haven’t met anyone who isn’t). If you want to have a holiday diet then the only must have will always be the balcony breakfast (or terrace or roof top) 😀 If you are staying in one of the cliff villas or hotels then you get a card day before to select what you would like for breakfast and what time you would like it served. I loved this routine, Mr B would just leave it up to me, and for some reason I got excited to do it ha ha. Although we stayed in Santorini for around 9 days I didn’t have a lay in day, and would always be up at 7 or 8am, as didn’t want to miss much of the morning, so that’s how I ordered the balcony breakfast – for approx. 8am. I would get ready and either wear something nice or just a snowy white dressing gown (which was also nice), sat at the table, take some deep breaths in to tune in with the place, admire the views and wait for the food lol!
Throughout the whole morning you could see waiters in white trousers and shirts, walking up and down the stairs between villas and hotels, carrying the trays (they must have had strong arms…). You can see on the picture what the breakfast looks like, but really it’s just a standard selection, various eggs, pancake, toasts, croissants, jam, ham, fruit, milkshakes, juice, tea, coffee etc. But for some reason lots of the things really taste different that anywhere else. Similar to Cambodian mini bananas, that have a special local taste, I think I must write about these in the future too!
What I loved most and could eat it forever were:
- The Pancakes! These were the most fluffy and delicate I ever had. With cream, fruit, icing sugar, jam or Nutella. Not sure if they taste everywhere like that but they sure did in our resort. (Here we stayed at Avaton Resort)
- Greek yogurt – hmm, I am no longer even sure what we sell in UK or Polish shops, the Greek yogurt in Greece is something else, not even close to what we have here! Again it’s very soft and seems to also be a bit fluffy. It was great on its own or with fruit, but when I added honey to it, well that was an awesome upgrade. Again I only tried this in one hotel.
- Sponge cake – very basic but trust me so yum! You can see it on the first photo.
I think that’s all, those two things were a revelation to me from everything I tried before, so if anything try at least the balcony breakfast and make sure you have the pancakes and Greek yogurt. Oh and other things I liked that were outside of the breakfast, some mentioned in my previous post – Greek wine, feta cheese in sesame seeds and honey, king prawns in Mama Thira Tavern (and I am not a fan of prawns, so imagine how nice were they).
